Swedish Hill has been producing wine on the western shore of Cayuga Lake since 1986, and the operation has grown into one of the largest family-owned wineries in the Finger Lakes. The portfolio is enormous—over 40 wines at any given time—ranging from dry Riesling and Cabernet Franc to sweet dessert wines, fruit blends, and mead. This breadth is both the appeal and the challenge: there is something for everyone, but the tasting experience can feel scattershot.
The best wines tend to be the dry whites—particularly the Riesling and the Cayuga White, a hybrid grape that the winery handles with more care than most. Swedish Hill also operates Goose Watch and Penguin Bay under the same family umbrella, all clustered along Route 89 near Romulus. The tasting room is spacious and the staff are generally efficient at managing groups. A pragmatic stop for visitors exploring Cayuga Lake’s west side.
