Abandon Brewing sits on Merritt Hill Road outside Penn Yan, operating out of a restored 1800s barn on 25 acres of gardens, vineyards, and orchards overlooking Keuka Lake. The setting is the first thing people mention, and rightly so — the view across the lake from the hilltop is staggering, Silver-medal-for-Best-Restaurant-View staggering. The barn itself has been thoughtfully preserved, rustic without being fussy, with an outdoor pavilion that catches the breeze and makes a Saturday afternoon feel like a vacation.

The beer list runs deep and rotates seasonally, with nearly all ingredients grown within fifty miles. The New England IPA, hazy and juicy with Citra and Mosaic hops, is the crowd-pleaser, but the more interesting pours are the Belgian-influenced ones — the Peppercorn Saison, loaded with green, black, and white peppercorns plus coriander and grains of paradise, is genuinely complex and unlike anything else you'll find in the region. The Reckless Abandon Double IPA at 8% is a big citrus bomb balanced by a smooth malt base. For non-drinkers, they make their own root beer in-house. The food menu is compact but considered: the pretzel bites with house-made beer cheese are a reliable start, and the Italian Sliders with pepperoni, capicola, hot honey aioli, and fried onions on a house-made brioche bun are legitimately good pub food. The Mac N' Cheese with beer cheese and crispy applewood bacon is the kind of thing you didn't know you needed after a day of wine tasting.

Abandon also hosts live music most weekends, runs yoga classes, and rents the adjacent restored 1800s Farmhouse as an Airbnb.
