Ashley Lynn is not your typical Finger Lakes tasting room. There are no slate-gray walls, no sommeliers swirling Riesling, and no tasting fees. This is a family-run winery on Route 318 in Waterloo — half a mile from the Finger Lakes Premium Outlets — where the Hurlbut family has been farming apples on 130 acres since 1929 and making wine for friends and relatives for over 40 years. The Waterloo location, opened in 2013 and currently operated by Leon, Lindsay, and Leroy Hurlbut, ferments and bottles everything on site, and the vibe is more fun afternoon out than serious oenophile pilgrimage.

The wine list runs 28-plus varieties across sweet, semi-sweet, and dry, spanning both apple and grape wines. The standouts lean sweet: Super Fred's Sweet Red is a full-bodied crowd-pleaser, Fred's Freedom Blend mixes strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry apple wine, and the Cayuga White — made from grapes originally developed at Cornell in Geneva — has crisp citrus and honey notes. For dry-wine drinkers, the unoaked Chardonnay, Dry Riesling, and Cabernet Franc are solid. But the real draw might be the wine slushies, which won Best Wine Slushy at the 2016 NYS Fair and come in flavors like Blackberry Sangria, Raspberry, Applejack, Peach, and Strawberry. The wine shakes are another Ashley Lynn original.

This is a four-time FLX Finest Gold winner for Best Winery with additional awards for Best Wine Selection, Best Smoothies, and Best Happy Hour. Open seven days a week (10 AM to 5 or 5:30 PM), it is a laid-back stop that works for couples, families, and anyone who wants to taste wine without attitude. Free tastings, every visit.
